Miles Redd Checks Into The Hotel Fasano

Designer Miles Redd

I’ve long been a fan of Miles Redd, the designer to the chic set here in New York, and the Creative Director of Oscar De La Renta Home. Miles designs spaces that are are theatrical, color-saturated, and celebrate glamour. His aesthetic is sort of Auntie Mame meets Babe Paley–a little quirky and unexpected (note the fab zebra print doors and pink walls, above) paired with only the best art and antiques.

As I am gathering a list of fabulous hotels to feature, I have been checking in with some of my favorite designers and tastemakers to find out which hotels inspire them. I turned first to Miles expecting he would pick something along the lines of a grand hotel in the South of France. But instead, Miles picked Rio’s sexy and modern Hotel Fasano which he admires because it has such a different aesthetic than his own. Below is my Q&A with Miles about the Fasano, along with pics that will make you want to pack your bags and head to Ipanema Beach.

Hotel Chic: What is your favorite hotel in terms of design?

Miles Redd: I love The Fasano in Rio. I’ve never seen anything like it. It feels fresh. It’s uber modern, almost like being in a fun house, but very cool.

HC: The Fasano is very different from the spaces you usually create, what about the design do you like?

MR: I found the design of the hotel to be completely surprising and interesting. I suppose it spoke to me because the look is outside of what I normally do. Designer Philippe Starck had a very singular and strong vision and that is always inspiring.

A Dali Inspired Mirror adds a Touch of the Unexpected

HC: What is your absolute favorite space in the hotel?

MR: I love the curious shaped hallways with the hypnotic striped chairs. It is just so modern Alice in Wonderland meets 2001, A Space Odyssey. I like that in a hotel experience, it is always fun for a few days to stay in a place that is just so beyond.

HC: Is there any aspect of the Fasano that would inspire a project of yours?
MR: The materials in the bar are brick and stone. Can you say ski lodge?
