The newest Edition hotel just opened in London and it looks amazing. Edition is the hip hotel brand that was born from the genius partnership between Ian Schrager and Marriott. In 2011 the brand launched with Edition Waikiki (which broke off with the brand last year) then Istanbul in 2012. This fall they opened the doors to the Edition London. The new global hotel brand definitely combines the strength of both partners–Schrager’s ability to create one-of-a-kind, sceney, design hotels and Marriott’s global reach and experience with larger properties. For the interiors Schrager and Edition teamed up again with Yabu Pushelberg.
The London Edition features all the hallmarks of a Schrager hotel–a buzzy and chic lobby, a fabulous bar, and a sceney restaurant that both the locals and visitors want to be a part of. But with a classic 19th.century backdrop with soaring ornate ceilings and restored Belle Epoque millwork, the hotel’s public spaces feel quintessentially British. The elegant backdrop paired with the modern lighting, boxy wood-framed sofas, and the vibrant pop of green velvet is the perfect balance of classic and contemporary. The gorgeous Georgian building was actually once 5 c. 1835 townhouses that were combined in 1908.
The rooms are also typical of Schrager’s hotels–very simple and understated–a place to retreat. But he’s departed from his signature white rooms, here they have a richer, mid-century vibe with oak paneled walls and floors, cool lighting, and cozy faux fur throws.
A lovely terrace off of the penthouse. The next Edition will open in Miami in 2014. Can’t wait to see what they come up with.
