Spanish designer Lazaro Rosa-Violan is the visionary behind the buzzing Hotel Pulitzer in Barcelona. Lazaro is a prolific restaurant, shop, and hotel designer who creates spaces that are sexy yet masculine. He designed the 91-room Hotel Pulitzer to feel like a cosmopolitan home and not a hotel. Not surprisingly then, the hotel boasts dozens of design ideas that would work particularly well for city dwellers. Read on for inspiration from the Hotel Pulitzer:
ARMOIRE BAR: About a decade ago, storing bulky TVs in armoires became a practical design trend. Now that flat screens make hiding the TV less of an issue, why not take some inspiration from the Pulitzer’s lobby where an antique red Chinese cabinet has been transformed into a showstopping bar. In your armoire, you can store bottles on the top shelf and glasses on the next. For added glam factor, mirror the inside–a trick that they do in the armoire bars in The Connaught‘s suites.
THINK BOXY: There is something about sofas in this boxy silhouette that always looks contemporary and urban, not to mention comfy! For city spaces, especially lofts or rooms with high ceilings, this style of sofa is a good choice to balance the height.
REPURPOSE!: OK you’re probably not going to do this at home but it is a good example of repurposing an antique. The hotel’s reception desk is actually a Baroque style Sicilian altar. Talk about a dramatic entrance!
BLACK AND WHITE WITH A POP OF RED: It is a color palette that is always sophisticated and always works. The retro style chairs in white leather look amazing with the black piping. The umbrellas are a great place to add a burst of red.
CHIC ART: DIYers out there take note of the graphic black and white art, these canvases could inspire a fun weekend art project. Note how brilliant bronze frames look against the paintings.
THE MAGIC OF THE MIX: A mix of antique, vintage and contemporary pieces always keeps a room interesting. Here, Lazaro combined antique Chinese wedding chairs, vintage leather arm chairs, and new Italian black and white carpets.
PERFECTION: How much do you love this guestroom? First there’s this incredible chunky dark wood poster bed with a gorgeous art gallery wall to look at from bed–what a nice thing to wake up to! Then, there’s the little seating nook with the fab vinyl Egg Chair, the framed Japanese kimono, and the Moroccan style octagonal table. Lazaro maximized the small space with an urbane, masculine sense of style.
CHOCOLATE AND WHITE: While the public spaces of the hotel have the crisp black, white, plus red palette–the bedrooms have a slightly softer color scheme. The backdrop is still white, but leather sofas, deep wood floors, and chocolate brown pillows and throws bring in warmth. There is still a touch of red here, but just on the border of the sisal rug. Lovely.
The Visit restaurant up on the roof looks like an incredible place to kick back on a warm summer night and take in Barcelona’s pretty skyline. Cheers!
